Getting to Know Your International Contacts—Part 1

Getting to Know Your International Contacts—Part 1

I did hear back from Early Childhood Australia: The Australian Early Childhood Advocacy Organization. They send me ECA Web Watch that let search for topic on their website. This week the focus was on poverty.   I look up articles on poverty in Australia from this website. I found several article but the one caught my interest was the October of 2013 issue. In Australia they had a week the focus on poverty it called Anti-Poverty week. The Benevolent Society made report on the family of Australia. They that 15 percent of children in Australia live in jobless home. They talk about the effect of poverty on these children how it will effect mental and physical health development and they are behind the peer when they start school.  The report give ways to improve the poverty for these family which included: “providing free or low-cost pre-school provision to three-year-old children experiencing significant disadvantage to ameliorate some of the negative impacts of disadvantage; providing support to families experiencing disadvantage during the prenatal period to promote the optimal development of children; provide direct services to children and families that promote the quality of the environments in which young children spend their time to ensure that parents and other caregivers relate to children in ways that protect, nourish and promote their development and wellbeing; and build whole of community, place-based, ‘collective impact’ alliances to develop and deliver a comprehensive suite of interventions that target whole communities and address both the presenting and the background needs of vulnerable families”(Pro Bono Australia News 2013) .   The new insight that I got from this is that poverty is all over the world. I like the idea that Australia   to provide family with service that can help them get out of poverty.

  1. Thank you for sharing your post with the class. I did not have any luck with responses after two tries to contact different organizations. I am glad at least you were successful. I too found that poverty is around the world. It affects all family members. Organizations can make a difference in the communities. It does take time but the little amount of time and money can have a huge impact on communities facing poverty. In the video for week three, it mentioned that if there is going to be a change, it needs to be at the community level (Laureate Education, 2013).

  2. Raejean,
Yes, resources available to families is a great way for them to find their way out of poverty. How do they provide these resources to the families?

  3. Wow what an interesting blog you had this week. I can't believe that they actually have a "Benevolent Society". I would like to learn more about what they do and their vision. I find it interesting that the group is behind providing free or low-cost pre-school provision. It almost seems that it is implied that this program does not yet exist in practice only in theory?? Did you find that they do in fact have early childhood education programs for impoverished children?
