Practcing Awareness of Mircoaggressions

Practicing Awareness of Mircoaggressions

I remember when I work at after school program the children was talking about singing voice. Over the summer the children did performed Beauty and The Beast. The child that play Belle sound it white but she was black and one of the boys said you sound white where is soul at. The microaaggression that happen was stereotype.  I could not believe that children at this age all ready are forming stereotype about each other. I talk to the child and explain to him that every body dose not sound the same and everybody voice is beautiful in their own way.  I also learn this week about shunning with culture. For example is your have a mental illness in the Asian culture they shunned you the do not talk to you at. I had parent that was shunned because she suffer from mental illness and only one parent speck to her. The rest of the parent look but don’t say nothing to her.

From this experience I found out that children form stereotype are early age. We as teacher should show children the good in everybody. The more they are expose to different culture the more they will learn that everybody is different. I also feel that in  culture when do not accept the difference in people.

  1. Great post RaeJean. I agree that children learn sterotypes and biases at an early age. I also have read or heard that Asian families will disown their children if they do not agree with something that they do. The child is seen as putting shame on the family. Thank you for sharing your example with us.

  2. It's sad that at such a young age, children began to display the negativity they have learned regarding prejudice and biases. Most of the time, they have no idea what is even meant by their comments. They're just repeating what was overheard. People really need to be more careful, you have no idea when children are listening. It only takes a moment to create a lifetime of damage.

  3. It really is sad how children see the way their family/friends treat one another and view the world, that even at such a young age children are already categorizing others into files in their heads. As a singer, I understand what he means by where is the soul, however, I know many people of many different races that bring that "soul" into their music be it singing or instrumental. Some people just have the ability to fluctuate their voices in ways that other people can't, and it doesn't matter what color your skin is.
Also what an interesting fact about the shaming/disowning of children who have a different level of ability than another. It really is amazing what different people and cultures believe in, but then again who are we to judge their beliefs... as difficult as it might seem sometimes.
