Personal Side of Bias , Perjudice , and Oppression

Personal Side of Bias , Perjudice , and Oppression

Every Child Is A Different Kind of Flower, And All Together, Make This World A Beautiful Garden ~ Children Quote

Memory of an bias, prejudice, and or oppression:

I was working at my old job and my co-worker stated that she like light skin children than dark skin children  and at my current job when my co-worker stated that she like mix race children. She also stated that mix race children are beautiful.

I feel that this diminished equity. I feel it diminished equity in that it was saying that children of different color and better than other.
Feelings brought up: I was embarrass that they said and  ashamed of them for treating the children like that.

In order to turn this into an opportunity for greater equity I would have send them to diversity training before they enter the classroom.

  1. Immediate training is an excellent beginning. These individuals have direct contact with children who will start to sense that something is not quite right and could begin to blame themselves:( I love the picture you posted referencing children as a beautiful garden because of their differences. It's a shame that many other people, especially those in education, miss that important fact.

  2. I can understand where this person was coming from in trying to give validity and positive "vibes" towards mix raced children. I believe that all children are beautiful, and unfortunately children of mixed race tend to get a lot of animosity because people can't get past race/skin color. Although she meant well this is one of the "micro aggressions" that was towards a group of people that could have been taking the wrong way. Thank you for sharing the picture you did, it really is beautiful!
