Time Well Spent

One deeply felt learning  I have come  to light  through this course was there are so many issues  that need to be address in the world early childhood education.

Another one was is nice learning from other and getting the perspective on how the deal with the world early childhood education in their community.

Finally the experience of doing online learning was new for me. I was used to going to class.  This was a beautiful learning experience I got meet people all over the world and learned new cultures.  I have been teaching for over 20 years I have seen the change in the early childhood field. I am looking forward to see how the world of technology will play role and help children learning.  Over all this was an excellent learning experience that will last a life time.

My long term goal is to get my Doctorate in future.  I will continue to take course from time to time to keep me updates on the change in the world of ECE. I am looking for to advocate for cause that I am passion about.

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

The Early Childhood Development caught my interest because it work with mother of Nepal that are in prison. “ECDC is dedicated to helping the children of imprisoned parents in Nepal, many of whom were living inside the jails alongside their mothers. This is no place for children and we are committed to giving them the shelter and education needed to break the cycle of crime and poverty. ECDC's Butterfly home provides these children a safe and nurturing environment where they can spread their wings to discover a brighter future.”(ecdcnepal.org 2015)

The next organization is Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO) “QUNO staff work with people in the UN, multilateral organizations, government delegations, and non-governmental organizations, to achieve changes in international standards and practice. Quakers are known for speaking out against injustice and war - issues that are incompatible with our vision of a world in which peace and justice prevail”. (quno.org 2015)  I choose this organization because of their interest children of prisoners and women in prison.

The last organization is Save the Children Save the Children invests in childhood – every day, in times of crisis and for our future. In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. By transforming children's lives now, we change the course of their future and ours.”(savethechildren.org) I choose organization because of their supporting children worldwide.

I saw one job that look interesting that was with Quaker United Nations Office programme assistant for September 2015 to August 2016. This is an opportunity for a person in sympathy with Quaker approaches and with an interest in international affairs and in international organizations. You would experience a range of international work, while working primarily as an assistant to QUNO’s Representative for Human Rights and Refugees in her work, which focuses on children of incarcerated parents (including children of parents sentenced to death), conscientious objection to military service and refugee protection. (quno.org. 2015)

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National /Federal Level

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National /Federal Level

The first one AIM:  Aid to Inmate Mothers. Their mission is “to provide services to Alabama’s incarcerated women with emphasis on enhancing personal growth and strengthening the bonds between inmate mothers and their children” (AIM, 2015). This programs fit well with my community of practice. I can use this program as example how mother are allow to keep their infant in prison.

The second is South Dakota the women’s prison, “they mother infant program allows the mother who gave birth to keep her infant with for 30 days.  Both mother and infant are kept away from the general population. In order to participate the mother has to take a parenting class.  Other education classes for women inmates are one that focuses on child’s behavior from 0 to 18 and a TOT’s program that focus on development of children. There is the PACT (parent and child together) extended visitation.  This program allows the mothers to have their minor children stay with them one weekend a month along with regular visiting hours. Inmates do have to apply for this program.”(Houck. R 2015). (http://doc.sd.gov/adult/facilities/wp/mip.aspx) This program also fit my community practices it also show that program is work for inmates.

The third is “The Prison Birth Project is an organization focused on reproductive justice, working to provide education, support, and advocacy to women at the intersection of the criminal justice system and motherhood. Our goal is to provide tools to help incarcerated and previously incarcerated women make empowering birth choices, and to provide continuous care through the transition into parenting. Previously incarcerated folks, mothers, and those most affected by the issues and mission of The Prison Birth Project are encouraged to volunteer, though all are welcome!”(theprisonbirthproject.org, 2015)

For all these organization their no job opportunities. They all do offer volunteer opportunities in their programs. I found that is great for me because I can learn a lot from each this organization just volunteering my time and helping families.

Profile of a Volunteer

Describe the volunteer efforts of the person you have elected to profile.

The person I elected is Doris Young, she is a volunteer for Child Space Cooperative Development, Inc. Also, she meets with childcare providers to discuss concern issues that they are having dealing with on a daily basis. She also post training on her Facebook page and emails the childcare provides.

Identify how you feel this person's work has positively impacted others.

I feel that a person’s work is vital for childcare providers. Knowing that she giving them information that they need to provide for the children and families.

Describe what you feel is a vital "take-away" message relative to this work in terms of your own volunteer efforts and advocacy work in fostering the well-being of children and families.

I really do not have that much volunteer experience with advocacy work. At the present, I am learning more by taking this class. I believe that advocacy work is important for children and families and the work that Doris Young is doing is vital for families with young children.

Advocacy Through Advertising

The message bring awareness about SIDS

This may be old fashion but putting your baby in a dresser draw is a safe place for the baby to sleep.

What wrong with this picture                             the right way for baby sleep in crib

Parents for your baby’s safety please don’t let them sleep with you.
This may be baby final resting Place
After reading over the information about how to reduce SIDS in babies.  I tried to create messages that was  powerful and make people think about where to put their baby to sleep.  Too many of our babies are dying because they are not being properly put in safe place .

Considering Your Capacity

Considering Your Capacity

The issues that impact me and fuel my passion are the following:

·         Quality childcare for all

·         Teacher’s salary

·         Programs that support children and families.

I believe that all children should have the opportunity to go a quality center. I think teacher salary need to increase across the nation.  Finally, I believe that there need to more programs that support the whole without income guild line.

What resources do you have at your disposal that can benefit your advocacy work?

The resource that I have at my disposal are flyers of different programs the support family. For example, like parenting class and free health screen for families.  Also, the different website of the quality childcare center in the community. For teachers have list training that help the increase their salary. Also list more that are campaigning for increase teacher’s salary.

In what ways do you hope to grow in order to be a more effective advocate?

I hope to gain more knowledge about advocacy so that I can advocate more for those issue close to my heart. Also, working with different advocates and learning from them on how to work with the families and the community leaders the will give me more experience.

Motivations, Strategies, Resources, Leadership, and Advice

Motivations, Strategies, Resources, Leadership, and Advice

What motivated you to start advocating for very young children?

I want to make a different in a child life.  I also want to give children health start to education. I want to support programs that focus child development.

Why is it essential to acknowledge and foster advocacy efforts at the micro as well as the macro level?

For me, advocacy starts off as a grassroots movement with small voices and the more voices add to the movement demand change.

What does it take to be a community leader on early childhood issues?

To be a community leader in early childhood issues the person must be knowledge on what families need in their community. You must have an open mind and willingness to work with other with different backgrounds and cultural beliefs. You must work with elected official in community.

What resources does it take to be a state leader on early childhood issues?

The two main resources are time and money. Working with an organization that supports young children educational programs.  . Pre-K for PA is an issue campaign supported by individuals and organizations across Pennsylvania who believe that investing in our children is the right choice and an urgent necessity. The 2014 election is was important election year for the state of Pennsylvania. All children should have the opportunity to enter school ready to succeed, and your help is needed to send that message to candidates for governor and the legislature.

What tactics or strategies do you use to mobilize others?

Sharing information through social media   by creating a page on Facebook, or like the different organization that support young children and families Naeyc or Children Defense. Also send emails about

What advice would you give to someone who was interested in taking a leadership role in advocating for young children and their families?

Start by joining up with local organizations that support issues that have meaning for you. Volunteer for an event or attend a community meeting offered via their membership emails. Learn who the elected officials in community are.  Also, write to the elected officials and tell them about your concern with young children and the changes that you would like to see for the community.

Messages for Families

     Messages for Families

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

-Senator Robert F. Kennedy, June 6, 1966

One of parent was pregnant with her three child .She was experiencing very bad back pain there was a language barrier with and doctors they would ask her the level of pain on scale from one  to ten she did not understand. I talk to the family advocate at my center who she good relationship with and she offer to go with her to emergency.  The family advocate told the doctor that she doesn't understand the question about the level of pain. She explain the question to parent so she could understand.  The end result is that my parent receive some pain medicine.

From this experience I learn that you can advocate for one family and make different. I continue to advocate for my families in many ways like get translator for parents meeting, help the find resources in the community and supporting them in growth and development.
