Messages for Families
Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
-Senator Robert F. Kennedy, June 6, 1966
One of parent
was pregnant with her three child .She was experiencing very bad back pain there
was a language barrier with and doctors they would ask her the level of pain on
scale from one to ten she did not understand. I talk to the family
advocate at my center who she good relationship with and she offer to go with
her to emergency. The family advocate told the doctor that she doesn't
understand the question about the level of pain. She explain the question to
parent so she could understand. The end
result is that my parent receive some pain medicine.
From this experience I learn that you can advocate
for one family and make different. I continue to advocate for my families in many
ways like get translator for parents meeting, help the find resources in the
community and supporting them in growth and development.
Raejean advocating for families with language barriers is something I never viewed as an advocacy need. However, I do think it is something that is needed. Taking an advocacy stance on this can help in the success of families that are faced with language barriers and need services.
