When I Reflect About My Collegial, Professional Learning

When I Reflect About My Collegial, Professional Learning

Three consequences of your experience being a part of caring, collaborative learning community for your professional growth and development, one consequence their no direct interaction with other people like in other college. Next you don't get see the professional growth of colleagues. Finally this not a consequence I enjoy learning from all of you everybody gave and sharing their knowledge and I learn something new from everybody.

From this experience the goal is the advocate for more funding for early childhood education and increasing teacher salaries. Also to promote the positive thing we do for family and children in education.

My Hypothetical Family Situation

My Hypothetical Family Situation

I am marry with four children from age 2 to 8. I am pregnant with my fifth child. I carry the Sickle Cell trait and so does my husband. Two of my children carry the trait. I just been told that my fifth child has Sickle Cell Anemia disease. “Sickle cell anemia is an inherited form of anemia a condition in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body. Normally, your red blood cells are flexible and round, moving easily through your blood vessels. In sickle cell anemia, the red blood cells become rigid and sticky and are shaped like sickles or crescent moons. These irregularly shaped cells can get stuck in small blood vessels, which can slow or block blood flow and oxygen to parts of the body. There's no cure for most people with sickle cell anemia. However, treatments can relieve pain and help prevent further problems associated with sickle cell anemia.”(Mayo Clinic 2014)  I work part- time and go to school and my husband work full-time. We are working poor. English is our first language. Two of my children attend Head Start and one attend Early Head Start and the oldest is in the third grade. When the baby is born my mother and mother-law will help me with daily routine of family.  I know that my child will be in and out of the hospital when sickle cell crisis occurs. In the future I would need health, early learning and development, and family leadership and support for my child. The early childhood related services that would support my entire family Is the relationship with the teachers and early intervention.

Have I given a complete picture of my family, or are there details missing that I should include in order to complete the assignment successfully? If so, what are your suggestions?

 Is this situation realistic?

Are there any specific websites I should be reviewing with regard to learning about quality services and programs for my child and family in this hypothetical family situation?

Does anyone have any thoughts, based on my specific family situation that will affect the early childhood system I am creating?

The Political Will to Improve Early Childhood Systems

The Political Will to Improve Early Childhood Systems

I have discovered that politics play an important role in the early childhood education field. I noticed that President Obama has brought   early childhood education to the forefront by increasing funding for early learning programs. I noticed in my state that if the governor is not for education they will cut the budget. I notice  in this election that  education was the most important thing in the voters in my state. The child care leaders in my state start a campaign call Pre- K for PA.  This campaign wanted candidates running for office to know the important of Pre- K program and the benefits of early learning.

The part that appeals to me the most advocacy there is so many causes that you can advocate for like funding early childhood education, better pay for teachers and more quality childcare centers. I also feel that networking it's also good when advocating you meet new people and they share same views as to do and work together to fight a cause.

Parent, Family, and Community Engagement

Parent, Family, and Community Engagement

I was drew to the stories because each of them gave testimony how Head Start change their lives. It was good to see how parent appreciate the program.

Involvement is a good opportunity for parents and family member’s benefits young children, families, and early childhood field because, when you are involve in your child’s education. Its shows you how to provide the best education for your child. It help us if your  child has special need you get  services  for them  and you can get step by step understanding of the services and you  can  advocates the  services faster because you are there at school to talk to the appropriate people. In the Head start programs it provides a job opportunity.  Also, getting on policy counsel helps   u to provide policy for school to help the school quality and give you the opportunity to interact with community and state official to make schools better. You also get to the opportunity to travel to conference to learn strategies about education your child.

The value of hearing these story for early childhood professional it show how parents and teachers  can work together to support the child. Also when the programs are successful the community leader can advocate for more program in the community to help family.

I feel that family involvement is essential for all strand in the early childhood field. The Head Start model is the best one because it incorporate all aspect of the family.  For example, whoever is important to the child in the family like grand mom, grand pop, mom, dad, aunt and uncle head start support the whole family.  As a teacher in early head start program I see how my parents are involve with every aspect of the program from being on policy counsel, helping teachers plan events, and volunteering in classroom

Quality Programs for All children

 Quality Programs for All children

As I view the multimedia presentation this week I learned a lot about the history of early childhood education as it relate to public policy some information I did know and some I did not know I would take this knowledge that I gain to use for rest class and beyond. In previous classes I learn the history of early childhood education as relate career path.   Early childhood education has been around for hundred and touch millions of children and families lives.
I notice that in the 19 century all the strand change to support the families. The day Nursery   school real change with every major event in the country like 1950   with Brown verse the Board education and 1960 with the Civil Right Era. Also In the 1964 for Head Start way form for children of low income so that get healthy start on education. All of these strand support and rich child education thought life.
My opinion is the President is specking about the important of early learning and has increase the funding for it. Also feel that states have their viewpoint on how the money is spent for early learning programs. For example I live in the state of Pennsylvania the governor for the past three years has cut early learning budget by 14 percent.  When he was running for re-election he gave some of money back for early learning. By me going to school and networking with different teachers I see how the budget cut have affect them.   Also as teacher I see how the budget cut as affect families because programs had to cut the number of children that they service.  I found that if have a governor that is for education they will invest in early childhood programs. I wish could show people who are not in the early childhood education field the important of these programs to families and children.

I hope in the next five year to increase the awareness of early childhood education all leaders that are in power that make decision that will affect education policy.  I hope childcare is adorable for all family in five years.  I also hope some form of universal preschool in all states. I hope that teacher salary increase because we losing teacher in the field   I wish there are more quality center for children to go.

What Resonates With You About Early Childhood Public Policy and Advocacy?

What Resonates With You About Early Childhood Public Policy and Advocacy?

Part 1 Why I did choose this specialization?   After I finish my Master of Education Degree. I was looking for  program  doctorate degree I came across  for public policy in ECE.I decide to take that instead on going for my doctorate degree.  I feel that advocate children and families is what I do every day. I want to learn more about public policy so I can speak community leaders and government leader to talk about the important of early learning.

Part 2 Why are advocates essential in the early childhood field?

Advocates are essential in the early childhood field we are teaching future leader of tomorrow. Advocates are the people who advocate for the field of early learning.  People who advocates give the voice for children, families, teachers who are involved in the early children field. They also tell the politicians what we need in the field for example, for more funding for programs.

Part 3 What do you hope to learn about policy and advocacy?

I hope to learn more about the how public policy work and how can use in my community. I want to take the knowledge that I learn from this class and work with different organization to advocate for more funding for early childhood education.  Also I want work with community leaders to advocate for more quality childcare programs.

Goodbye

Goodbye

The team I had the hardest time leaving was Master of Education cohort. For two years on Tuesday night. I was allow to learned, sharing and build friendship.   We became a close group in those two years. In this two years the group had six children born and two marriage. We would discuss current issues that affect the education field. We worked together on ways to find funding for education. We would listen to each other about each other jobs. For example some of the group was not sure if they had a job the next school year because of budget cuts. We started to countdown the classes in September of the last year.

The last eight weeks of class I started to realize that my journey with this group of friends was coming to an end. No more Tuesday night sitting in class. No more papers and group project due.  I also realize that I would not see some of the people in my group anymore and that was sad. I remember on graduation day we took a group picture of all us. That day was the end of my journey with my cohort. This experience taught be that I could work together with a group of people from different backgrounds and different opinions can come together to build a knowledge with each other. Now we communication through Facebook

Conflicts and Disagreements

Conflicts and disagreements

In the being of the school year new children transition in my classroom.  Now management have make a new decision to change the time when new children transition in classroom now time 9:00 before in was 8:30 am  when the another children came it.  The conflict that I am have is that management made this decision without talking to the teachers.  At 9:00 I am in transition mold. I am changing diapers, tooth brushing, and clean up from breakfast. I cannot talk to a new parents while doing all these things. I have tried the strategy of listening to my new parents but sometime I cannot respond to question.  So I have decide talk to management about this new decision by used the conflict tool I learn this week.  I also will write down my concern about the new time and how it affect my job. I would welcome any suggestion from my colleagues.

Who am I as a communicator?

Who am I as a communicator?

Before this class I never though about how  I communicate with other people . This week  I gave some insight about myself when It come with communicate with other people. After talk to friends, family and co-workers they all gave me different  view point of how I communicate with them. I found with my co-workers it more information communication. We attend to pass on information about the children and families that we come in contact with . My family and friends it more of updates  what going on in ours lives.  Now that is being of the school year I found myself more as listener to my parents as I am building new relationship with them.

communication style

The communication style that I admire was  Mrs. Caroline Jordan she was Direct at my first job in the field of early children  education.  She was nurturing  and calming voice. She would always give word of encouragement . I remember one time  on  the job we was unsatisfied   with our pay.  She told us to do a sick out and that will get the attend of management   After we did that our pay did change. She would always standup  for staff. I learn for her how to be calm when talk to people and how to listen to what person is said to you.  Years later the experience that I learn from allow me to communication with parents and co-worker in calm way.

Professional Hopes and Goals

                                                   Professional  Hopes and Goals

My hope for working with families that come from a diverse background is that we can build on the background knowledge of the families. Also with knowledge I gain from this class it allow me to reach more families that have a diverse background so we can work together to support the child in the classroom.

One goal is I  would like to more diversity add to the curriculum and  more training for teachers on diversity. So that we can support the families and children.

I would like to say thank you  to all my colleagues for their support during this class. Also would like to thank you for sharing your insight , knowledge, view point .

Personal Side of Bias , Perjudice , and Oppression

Personal Side of Bias , Perjudice , and Oppression

Every Child Is A Different Kind of Flower, And All Together, Make This World A Beautiful Garden ~ Children Quote

Memory of an bias, prejudice, and or oppression:

I was working at my old job and my co-worker stated that she like light skin children than dark skin children  and at my current job when my co-worker stated that she like mix race children. She also stated that mix race children are beautiful.

I feel that this diminished equity. I feel it diminished equity in that it was saying that children of different color and better than other.
Feelings brought up: I was embarrass that they said and  ashamed of them for treating the children like that.

In order to turn this into an opportunity for greater equity I would have send them to diversity training before they enter the classroom.

Practcing Awareness of Mircoaggressions

Practicing Awareness of Mircoaggressions

I remember when I work at after school program the children was talking about singing voice. Over the summer the children did performed Beauty and The Beast. The child that play Belle sound it white but she was black and one of the boys said you sound white where is soul at. The microaaggression that happen was stereotype.  I could not believe that children at this age all ready are forming stereotype about each other. I talk to the child and explain to him that every body dose not sound the same and everybody voice is beautiful in their own way.  I also learn this week about shunning with culture. For example is your have a mental illness in the Asian culture they shunned you the do not talk to you at. I had parent that was shunned because she suffer from mental illness and only one parent speck to her. The rest of the parent look but don’t say nothing to her.

From this experience I found out that children form stereotype are early age. We as teacher should show children the good in everybody. The more they are expose to different culture the more they will learn that everybody is different. I also feel that in  culture when do not accept the difference in people.

My Family Culture

My Family culture

A description of three items you would choose

My music  collection

My Try God Necklace

My family Photos

How you would explain to others what each of these items  means to you

In my music collection I have over 5000 cd . My music collection is my escape  from world.

My Try God Necklace  is piece  of jewelry that my mother gave me . It remind me of her love for me.

My family photos are picture of my family member that are important to me.

My feels for give up two items upon arrival is easy I would let go my music  collection and family photo. My music collection can be replace. My family photo can be replace in my  memory . I like to remember people the way they were.  The one items that I am keeping is my Try God Necklace  because it is what keep me going though the day.

The insight I gain my doing this assignment was that I learn how my parents feel when the came to this country and left everything behind to come here.  For example I had a parent who left her daughter in Ecuador with mom . She had not seen her daughter since she left to come America . I had a lot of parents that left family  member in their country. So do go back and see them  but most of the do not . This experience got me to think about having to come to new place with nothing  and not knowing any body and try to make.

When I Think of Research

When I Think of Research

When I started this class , I had so many topic run through mind that would like write about. After the first week in the class I realized that is course was different from my previous research class.   The biggest challenge for me applying all that learn to my  simulation  research. In taking this course, now  more aware of what goes on in children research. I learn so much from this class about research  that now I have better understand of it .

To all of my colleagues thank you for sharing their insight over the past eight weeks. I learned something new from each of you.

Research Around the World

I decide to explored  the website of Early Childhood Australia in order to examine the research topic  in that part of the world. These are the topic I pick

1. Professional  partnership in children's services: Working together for children
2. Learning and teaching through play
3. Partnership: Working together in early childhood setting
4. Secure transition:  Supporting children to feel secure , confident and included

I gain new insight of the different topic  especially  the  spirituality  of the children. I found this topic very interesting I would learned more about this topic. The topic of spirituality is not talk about in mainstream childcare.  Also the research topics  in Australia are some of the same topic we are researching in the United States. It was good to see what the world research topic are and how the related to children around world.

Research that Benefits Children and Families

Research that Benefits Children  and Families

If I possessed the means and the knowledge to conduct research studies on any topic in the early childhood field I wound conduct more research autism and why some children get and some do not. Especially in the Asian children.  I work at my center four years and at least five children have been diagnosed with some form of autism. There is are many research studies  being done on autism. all  research being done on autism is help children and families.  Every year  autism research  come out with that benefit children and families.   App on IPhone and android  phone that help children communicate their feeling and wanted I used this app with my families and they said it work for them the different app for Autism. Over all autism will continue to be research  because more children are being diagnosed with it  and it is on the forefont   in early childhood education.

Getting to Know Your International Contacts-Part 3

Getting to Know Your International Contacts-Part 3

Over the past seven weeks learned a lot of new and interesting thing about international early childhood  education.  This week learned about the children in Africa  and the early childhood care and education. " The first eight years of child's life are decisive for human  development . Yet statistics on early childhood in Africa  are appalling.
  • Less than 12% African children currently have access to Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) services
  • 12,000 African  children die every day under conditions that could been avoided-the equivalent of a Boeing 747 crashing every hour
  • Of  the 76 % of children entering primary school each year,38% have experienced moderate or severe  malnutrition impacting on their psychomotor and cognitive development.

These ideas will help me with future goals is to become a advocate for children and families for quality center. I Also want work with politician   to  improving funding for  early childhood education. finally I want to become more involved  with issues the effect early childhood education.

Getting to Know Your International Contacts Parts2

Getting to Know Your International Contacts Parts2

I review the Harvard University website this weeks. I look over all the different program that the organization was involved. The first one the peak my interest was the Apply the Science of Early Childhood in Brazil.  The collaboration with Global Children Initiative and Nucleo Ciencia Pela Infancia and also partner with David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.  The project is aim to use the science of child health and development to guide stronger policies and larger investment to benefits young children and their families in Brazil. Next I found and article on the Zambian Early Childhood Project this article was very interesting.  I learn that Zambian Project focus on anti –malaria initiative. I also learned that there is not cure for malaria.  In Zambia the leading cause of death is malaria and HIV is other cause of death in Zambia among children under five.( Gunther Fink, 2011).   Also there is no vacancies for malaria.  The Zambia project of anti-malaria initiative had a positive effect on children under five the mortally rate have drop to 30 percent. That good sign that project is working in Zambia.

After review this website I am interesting in finding out more information why there is not vacancies for malaria. I also interesting see how the partner with Brazil and the Global Children Initiative is working to better children and family in Brazil.

The zero to three is always current with issues in the early childhood field.

The one insight that I gain was the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Technical Assistance. Since some of co-worker go home visits every day. The information would be help for them.  I also gave me ideas to do on home visits with my parents.

Getting to Know Your International Contacts—Part 1

Getting to Know Your International Contacts—Part 1

I did hear back from Early Childhood Australia: The Australian Early Childhood Advocacy Organization. They send me ECA Web Watch that let search for topic on their website. This week the focus was on poverty.   I look up articles on poverty in Australia from this website. I found several article but the one caught my interest was the October of 2013 issue. In Australia they had a week the focus on poverty it called Anti-Poverty week. The Benevolent Society made report on the family of Australia. They that 15 percent of children in Australia live in jobless home. They talk about the effect of poverty on these children how it will effect mental and physical health development and they are behind the peer when they start school.  The report give ways to improve the poverty for these family which included: “providing free or low-cost pre-school provision to three-year-old children experiencing significant disadvantage to ameliorate some of the negative impacts of disadvantage; providing support to families experiencing disadvantage during the prenatal period to promote the optimal development of children; provide direct services to children and families that promote the quality of the environments in which young children spend their time to ensure that parents and other caregivers relate to children in ways that protect, nourish and promote their development and wellbeing; and build whole of community, place-based, ‘collective impact’ alliances to develop and deliver a comprehensive suite of interventions that target whole communities and address both the presenting and the background needs of vulnerable families”(Pro Bono Australia News 2013) .   The new insight that I got from this is that poverty is all over the world. I like the idea that Australia   to provide family with service that can help them get out of poverty.

My Connections to Play

Play is our brain's favorite way of learning.

Diane Ackerman

Children have always learned and created places for themselves through play.

Donna R. Barnes

When children pretend, they’re using their imaginations to move beyond the bounds of reality. A stick can be a magic wand. A sock can be a puppet. A small child can be a superhero.

Fred Rogers

I was the queen of the big wheel  I had total of 5 big wheels

When I was younger my mother and grandmother  support my play  by give opportunity  to explore my environment . In the summer time I would help my grandmother in her garden. My mother introduce me to new thing how to play jax and how to jump rope. Also the parent in the neighbor  who allow us children to play all day long and have fun.

Play today is not the same as when I was a child. We went outside and play game like freeze tag, kick ball, Mother May I, jump rope,  and hand game  example hand up to  85. Today children  do not play outside because the environment is not safe for them. I wish that children today can play for at least 30 minutes  day  beside in  school.

In my life play was played an important role. It allow be develop  good friends. It taught rule on how  to play game. I it allow me  to free to explore my environment as child. Now play in  life is different  now teaching child how to play  and giving opportunity to play.
